Elizabeth Bishop does an interesting job by potraying the fish in the poem as a human being. The words she uses to describe this fish is remarkable. She tries to connect with this fish because she sees something special in him. She is extremely passionate about coming into contact with this particular fish. She states, " I looked into his eyes which were far larger than mine but shallower, and yellowed, the irises backed and packed with tarnished tinfoil seen through the lenses of old scratched isinglass." In this quote she is looking deeply into the fish's eyes and is treating him as if he is human. In my opinion I think she saw strength in this fish and courageousness because he had five hooks in his jaw and he was still living.
